Social Identity and 'The Self.'
This is an aspect of society, culture and social sciences that has arisen much speculation and debate; how the concept of 'the self' as our personal and social identities, are constructed by the ever changing contemporary society that surrounds us, consumes us and becomes a part of our whole lives. This is an ongoing explorarion and play with the construction of our identities within our world of rising information communication technology, mass media consumption, waves of consumerist culture and the melting post-modern culture.
The areas of self identity that cry out in the practice here are, how are social identities can become masks or a façade; our expressions of personal agency in everyday life, such as our self management, engagement with others and the way how we shape and stylize ourselves to give structure to our identities; how mass media and even something as simple as the newspapers we read influence the self-presentation of individuals, then all the way to the globalization of world wide news and the advancement of the internet in the world. The concept of the self certainly does have a central position in our emerging world of mass media and consumption, which is why there is a need for it to be explored and experimented with, not to ridicule, but to delve into it psychologically, theoretically and playfully. Bringing also into question and experimentation, how identity is constructed in the world without the light of Christ in the our beings and hearts.
